We take the time and effort to bring peace and play fair. We cooperate and treat our friends with respect. We have acceptance of other's differences because we know we are all equal, even though we are not all the same.
At McCarthy, relationships matter!

That's right, according to a few news sites online, we MIGHT be able to see the northern lights tonight! Usually they are seen in the North Pole, Alaska, Canada, and Russia, but they might reach farther south tonight.
According to one article, it might happen around midnight, however a different article said any time between sunset and sunrise. A different article said that it might happen again on Friday night. I found a link to the "Northern Lights Forecast," but so many people are trying to find out about it today that the site crashed! That link is here: http://auroraforecast.gi.alaska.edu/ At the time of writing, I'm not sure if we'll be able to see this amazing phenomenon (it seems that the sky is too cloudy to even see stars). However if you DO see it, tell us about it during Morning Meeting! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Enjoy the 4 1/2 days you have on break; you don't have homework.
If you want to keep your skills sharp, feel free to play some of the math games or watch a video here on the blog, but make sure you spend some of your time away from the computer and spend some quality time with your family. Today we went on a field trip to the Salem Maritime Museum and we boarded the Friendship. For some of us, it was our first time ever on a ship! We learned how important Salem was to this country in the 1700s. Most (98%) of the country's revenue (money) came from other countries that traded goods with people in our country, and most of the boats going to those other countries departed from Salem. Amazing! While on board the Friendship we emulated the crew members who worked hard hauling cargo by singing sea shanties as we hauled a load of cargo up to the ship. We also got to go below deck to see where the crew spent their free time and slept. Today was our first class party. Thank you to all the parents who brought treats, pumpkins, decorations, music, activities, and came to spend time with our class and help out. The kids were very appreciative! One boy told me, "This was the best day ever!" I think everyone had a lot of fun, and they earned it. What was your favorite part of the party? Answer in the comments below, and be sure to say "Thank you" to the parents who helped make the party great! This week is Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is a time when we learn all about making good choices and rejecting things that are unhealthy such as drugs, alcohol and tobacco, and bullying behaviors.
In class we are working on an essay contest that involves 9 different facets of living a healthy life. By choosing one of these topics to write about, you demonstrate that you are making healthy choices, and you have a better chance of living a successful life as you grow up. I hope one of you win the contest for McCarthy this year! Can you sum up your essay in one sentence in the comments below? I hope everyone had a fun time at the Topsfield Fair! The weather was perfect and it was awesome seeing so many faces from Peabody and McCarthy T shirts around every corner. Thank you again to all the parents who volunteered their time to chaperone. With 8 adults to accompany us, I felt like we could all relax a little more and really enjoy the day. I appreciate all of your help. Kids, do you remember any of the facts from the Scavenger Hunt? What was your favorite part of the trip? Answer in the comments below! Mrs. Grenier came to talk to our class on Thursday about what to do if you have a problem with your classmates. It could be at recess, lunch, the bus, or online.
Remember, now that you're getting older, there are some problems you can handle on your own. Try choosing 2 different ways to solve problems with other kids. However, if you feel like you have a serious problem, you're afraid, or too frustrated to decide what to do, be sure to tell an adult. Your parents, teachers, principal and guidance councilor are here to help! Here is a simple way to keep your desk neat and organized.
Notice how the books fit well sideways on one side; folders and notebooks fit on the other side. If you organize your desk this way, you should have room at the front for your dictionary and a small pencil pouch (in the photo the pouch is hard to see because it's tucked away, but it's pink). NO papers should be loose in your desk; always keep papers in folders. Don't keep more than two extra books, pencil boxes, or binders in your desk. If it gets too full, it won't shut and it will be hard to find things. You are allowed to keep your binder under your chair (but nothing else). |
