a. If you want to show $35,421, but you don't have any 1 dollar bills, you have two choices. You could show $35,420 or $35,430. Of course $35,420 is closer.
This week we learned how to estimate using (base ten) dollar bills. a. If you want to show $35,421, but you don't have any 1 dollar bills, you have two choices. You could show $35,420 or $35,430. Of course $35,420 is closer. b. If you want to show $35,421, but you don't have any tens or ones, you have two choices. You could show $35,400 or $35,500. Which do you think is closer? c. If you want to show $35,421, but you don't have any hundreds, tens, or ones, what are your two best choices? Which is closer? d. If you want to show $35,421, but all you have are ten thousand dollar bills, what are your two best choices? What is number is closer?

When you think about estimating numbers, you should think about finding an easier number to say or work with. In other word, it's going to have a lot of zeroes at the end.
On the other hand, when you estimate, your simpler number needs to be close to the real number! Here are the closest numbers you can get to 31,674. If you estimate to the nearest ten thousands place, the closest number is 30,000. Can you estimate to any of the other places? Look at the two choices in the photo, and answer in the comments below. Before you start estimating numbers to different place values, up to the hundred thousands place, you need to be able to place numbers in between a pair of numbers.
If you had a numberline with these numbers on it: 32,000 33,000 34,000 35,000 36,000 37,000 38,000 39,000 What pair of numbers would you place 34,304 in between? Answer in the comments below. What game is your favorite? Answer in the comments below! Today we took a math pretest on multiplication and division. If you feel good about how well you know your facts, that's great! If you already know you need to keep working on memorizing your facts, help is on the way. :) For now, we've started exploring some practice options that involve educational video games! You can play these games here. Here is a list of games I recommend:

There are other games on the page for multiplication that I haven't tried. If you try one and you like it, tell which one and why you like it in the comments below. Another great site to practice your multiplication facts is Freerice.com. It doesn't have cute characters like the other sites. However, for every question you get right, 10 grains of rice is donated to person who lives in an area in need, where starvation is a common, terrible problem.
Ten grains of rice doesn't sound like much, but imagine if you play for 5 minutes a day, 3 times a week, for 10 months. You could provide many meals to people who those less fortunate than you. Take a look: freerice.com. We have been learning about the rights given to all American citizens over the age of 18, by the Bill of Rights, which are the first 10 amendments to the Constitution.
We acted out a scenario about a shopper who was accused of stealing one day when they were shopping for school supplies. Here are some of the things we learned: "When someone is shopping, a policeman can not look through your pockets to see if you stole something." "When someone is shopping they have the right not to be searched for no reason." "The judge didn't have to wait until the jury came for her trial since a Post It costs less than $1." "When you are in court and they accused you of stealing something under $20 you do not need a jury for your case." "The person has the right to post bail before a trial." "If you are guilty you may go to prison." "They must have a warrant to go in houses." "Her trial was in June because she has a right to a speedy trial." Great job, everyone! Can you remember any other rights the Bill of Rights gives American citizens over the age of 18? Today we did an activity to help us get ready to estimate to a given place value. A tool that can help us do this is a number line. When you were at the ten thousand number line station, you put 31,674 between the 30,000 and 40,000. Notice that the ten thousands place either stays the same when you estimate, or it increases by one. The numbers to the right of this place become zeroes. When you were at the thousands number line station, you put 31,674 between the 31,000 and 32,000. Notice that the thousands place either stays the same when you estimate, or it increases by one. The numbers to the right of 31 become zeroes. Here is what the answers looked like when we put 31,674 between numbers on each number line.
Now you try: Can you tell what numbers 93,593 would go between on a thousands number line? Answer in the comments below! Today in Morning Meeting we talked about what you should do when you need help. Here are some strategies your classmates have tried, and been successful with!
