We have been learning about the rights given to all American citizens over the age of 18, by the Bill of Rights, which are the first 10 amendments to the Constitution.
We acted out a scenario about a shopper who was accused of stealing one day when they were shopping for school supplies. Here are some of the things we learned:
"When someone is shopping, a policeman can not look through your pockets to see if you stole something."
"When someone is shopping they have the right not to be searched for no reason."
"The judge didn't have to wait until the jury came for her trial since a Post It costs less than $1."
"When you are in court and they accused you of stealing something under $20 you do not need a jury for your case."
"The person has the right to post bail before a trial."
"If you are guilty you may go to prison."
"They must have a warrant to go in houses."
"Her trial was in June because she has a right to a speedy trial."
Great job, everyone!
Can you remember any other rights the Bill of Rights gives American citizens over the age of 18?
